LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has on Monday summoned a Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) officer to present record of Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz’s anti-judiciary speeches.
During hearing of petition filed against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif and daughter Maryam Nawaz, LHC judge Justice Shahid Karim summoned a PEMRA representative to present records of anti-judiciary speeches of the former prime minister and his daughter.
Justice Shahid said in his remarks that a respective officer of the media regulatory authority should appear before the court on February 23 and present the record. He added that the officer should also brief LHC about measures PEMRA has taken to counter Nawaz and daughter’s anti-judiciary narrative.
Earlier this month, Civil society activist Amna Malik had filed the application against Nawaz and Maryam for alleged contempt of court. Applicant’s counsel Azhar Siddique submitted that all the respondents were continuously attacking the judges of Supreme Court (SC).
He said Nawaz Sharif as well as other leaders of the PML-N were trying to discredit the superior judiciary. He said that the applicant had continuously pointed out and highlighted the contemptuous remarks by disqualified former prime minister and others which also went on air through some media channels but PEMRA never took action against those propagating and misreporting the judicial proceedings.
