KARACHI: The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of Sindh police has been deployed after eight election representatives received threats and also after the misuse of digital media was observed.
A committee on Wednesday, comprising officials of the CTD, the Federal investigation agency (FIA) and intelligence agencies summoned a meeting of representatives from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), and from mobile phone and internet services providers.
A comprehensive action plan was initiated in view of misuse of digital media, anti-state propaganda on social networking websites and possible security threats to elected representatives, sources informed.
In this regard, Additional IG CTD and Special Branch Sindh Sanaullah Abbasi chaired a key meeting on Tuesday. Officials from concerned departments were also present in the meeting.
Sources told the media that the issue of threats to election representatives in Sindh was also reviewed keeping in mind the recent assassination attempt on the life of Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal.
The meeting emphasised the threats issued to eight representatives by banned outfits and other organizations, sources said.
While discussing the upcoming meeting on Wednesday, Additional IG Sanaullah Abbasi said that officials would discuss the role of the PTA, and of mobile phone and internet services providers with regard to digital media and in formulating a future policy.
